How to Cook Frozen Mozzarella Sticks in an Air Fryer

Mozzarella sticks are a fan (or should I say “fam”) favorite! They make a tasty appetizer for Italian meals, and a yummy game day snack. They’re fairly easy to cook as well. Now, these frozen cheese sticks are normally deep fried, but did you know you can fry them in an air fryer as well? In this short article, I’ll teach you how to make some air fryer mozzarella sticks.

The Cooking Process

First off, let me tell you that the process is pretty simple. Set the temperature dial to 375F. Make sure you preheat for 5 minutes if your air fryer requires it.

For food preparation, all you need to do is remove the frozen mozzarella sticks from your freezer. Then, place them flat in an even layer into the air fryer basket. Although it may be tempting, don’t stack them on top of each other. If you need to cook more than you can fit in a single layer, simply repeat the process multiple times. Don’t compromise the quality of your food by rushing. No oil spray is necessary (yay for less calories!).

Air fry the sticks for 5 minutes. Once the timer sounds, flip them and fry for another 1 1/2 minutes. You want to fry them long enough to change their color to that gorgeous golden-brown, but not too long or else most of the cheese will ooze out.

Because air fryer models and mozzarella stick brands vary, you may need to slightly decrease/increase the cooking time. Don’t expect your first batch to be flawless, but you’ll quickly become a pro, so no worries!

Once they’re done, remove the basket, and slowly empty it onto a plate with a paper towel on it to absorb any excess grease from the batter/breading.

NOTE: Do not thaw the sticks beforehand.

Don’t Forget the Sauce!

If you want to disappoint your guests, serve up some of these without any marinara sauce. Go ahead, try it. See if they ever ask you to make them again… No, that’s a terrible idea. Don’t ever serve these without marinara sauce for dipping. It’s a standard.

If you want to get creative, there are other sauces you can use as well. In a pinch, ketchup can work as an alternative to marinara (please don’t fall out with me mozzarella stick connoisseurs…). If you have some spare pizza sauce, I highly recommend using that over ketchup. Ranch is another option you can eat these with. Want to add a bit of spiciness? Try some hot sauce, such as buffalo or sriracha. But don’t try honey mustard, that’s just gross.

Conclusion: Cooking Frozen Mozzarella Sticks Is Easy

You’ve likely already cooked some frozen food in your air fryer (such as French fries). Cooking frozen cheese sticks is simple and easy. If you need a delicious snack, your air fryer is up to the task for making frozen appetizers.

As a quick recap, put the sticks into a single layer in your air fryer basket, don’t thaw or spray them with oil, and definitely don’t forget to serve them with marinara sauce 😉
