Are you looking for how to cook a sweet potato in a toaster oven? YUMMM! You’ve already got my taste buds tingling.
Today is your day, as we will not only be sharing the method, but will also be giving some tips to come up with the most heavenly sweet potato you have tasted so far.
Yes, let’s get straight to it!
No, baked sweet potatoes are NOT just something to serve on Thanksgiving! You can add them to your daily diet. Not only are they nutritious and scrumptious, they are just as good for people who are watching their diet as they are for foodies like me!
Step 1: Turn on The Toaster Oven
Choose the “bake” setting and adjust the heat to 400 degree F. The heat setting depends on your liking. If you think 400 is too high, you can always lower the heat down to say, 300 or 350.
Remember: The lower the heat setting, the more time it will take to cook.
Pro Tip: To get the sweet potato to cook evenly from inside, place the cooking rack on which you are going to put the sweet potatoes on the lowest position.
Step 2: Gather the Supplies
Now that you’ve started preheating your toaster oven, it’s time to gather the supplies. So, what do we need?
- Sweet potatoes (2 medium sized)
- Oil (any type of oil e.g. olive oil, coconut oil, canola oil etc)
- Baking sheet
- Pot holders/Oven mitt
Need some nonstick stainless steel baking pans? Check out our recommended set below.
Step 3: Prepare the Sweet Potato
First things first, we need to clean the sweet potato well. Keep in mind to scrub the skin well and thoroughly. The reason is that we plan on roasting the sweet potato with the skin still on. So, you do not want to eat something dirty, do you?
Pro Tip: To avoid peeling the skin off while washing, always use a kitchen towel to gently scrub away the dirt.
Once you have cleaned it with the kitchen towel, give it some more time to dry off.
Step 4: Cut it up/leave it whole and stab it
Now, you have two ways you can go about it. Either you can:
- Cut it in half lengthwise
- Bake the entire sweet potato: For this, you need to stab it in a few places with a fork or knife thoroughly. This will allow air to pass through and helps in spreading the heat evenly.
Whatever style you choose, the rest of the steps are going to be the same.
Step 5: Season
In this step, you can add any external seasoning you want. For us, the simple salt and oil will suffice.
Pro Tip: Play it safe. Don’t go ahead and add pepper as it won’t go well with the sweetness of the sweet potato
Step 6: Place Them on the Pan
Now, it is time to put the prepared sweet potato on the baking sheet.
Pro Tip: To get the most out of the juices of the sweet potato, place it face down in the pan. For instance, the interior should be down and the closed part should be up.
Step 7: Bake ‘em up
All you need to do now is to wait! It is certainly going to be worth it!
Check after 15-20 minutes. Usually, it takes 20-25 minutes for a medium sized sweet potato to become fully cooked in the toaster oven.
Pro Tip: The best way to check is insert a fork inside. When they are tender enough, you are good to go.
Step 8: Take Them Out
Using your pot holder/oven mitt, remove the pan. Use a smooth motion so there’ll be less of a chance of damaging them as you bring them out.
Step 9: Add Toppings
Add your toppings while the sweet potato is still warm. Butter and brown sugar lightly sprinkled on top make an excellent topping.
Tasty! Can you smell that delightful fragrance?
Tips to Clean Up
Thought we forgot about cleanup? Yes, we know what a sticky business cooking sweet potato is. So, we have some tips and tricks for cleaning up too.
Yes, yes, you can thank us later!
- DON’T delay cleaning up later. Even though cleaning up is never fun, if you place the baking pan and rack in warm water, it will take half the time to clean.
- You don’t need to wash it right away now. You can give it a good scrub later.
